Reports indicate that Spotify is considering a significant change to its payout model. The latest information reveals that starting early next year, Spotify’s ‘minimum annual threshold’ for tracks to begin generating royalties will be set at 1,000 streams.
*What does this mean*?:
To earn royalties on Spotify, tracks will need to amass a minimum of 1,000 streams within 12 months, and in the case of an album each track in the album must amass the same and not only those with the threshold will receive revenue and this is limited for a year.
*Who’s affected Affect*?:
Any artiste whose track receives fewer than 1,000 streams in 12 months, won’t get paid any royalties.
*Compensation for unpaid artiste ?:*
No,
*Reason for Spotify Implementing This Change*:
Spotify is introducing this change to address the issue of tracks with low stream counts, where the earnings are below what lots of distributors would typically pay out. Additionally, it aims to combat fraudulent streams and tracks, ensuring a fairer distribution of royalties.
*Does this apply to other streaming platforms?:*
No, this is limited to Spotify only thus they are the first major streaming platforms to introduce the 1,000-stream minimum requirement. However, more stores are likely to follow shortly because DSPs are out against “fraudulent streaming.”
*What’s the fact of upcoming and small Artiste?:*
While this change may be challenging for upcoming artists with fewer than 1,000 streams, it also benefits smaller artists who surpass this threshold. They will have the opportunity to access a portion of the $40 million that Spotify intends to redirect to artists exceeding the threshold.
*My Advise*
It is high time you discuss marketing strategies that can help you surpass this threshold, building your fan base and increasing your music reach
