Feeling a bit down lately, I decided to take a break from work and dive into some movies.
I stumbled upon the biopic of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti on @primevideo, and it captivated me so much that I wished it were a series!
Iyinmide Ayo-Olumoko played the younger Funmilayo Kuti, while Kehinde Bankole portrayed her in adulthood, and the veteran Joke Silva played her in later life. These three professionals’ portrayals of Funmilayo Kuti across different stages of her life are nothing short of outstanding. Their powerful renditions and top-notch acting bring to life the incredible story of this trailblazing political activist and women’s rights advocate. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it!
However, it’s the unsung heroism of her husband, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, that truly stands out.
Reverend Ransome-Kuti’s unwavering support for Funmilayo, despite facing adversity, exemplifies true partnership. His courage in supporting his wife in fighting against a male-dominated society, balancing activism with family, and embracing mutual respect in their marriage offers valuable lessons for men today. The husband, even when he was sick, kept it away from her so she wouldn’t get distracted, and that’s a big sacrifice to be made. He truly wanted his wife to succeed.
Remarkably, he never viewed her success as a threat. Instead, he celebrated her strengths, never competing or overshadowing her. This selflessness reminds us that true love supports and uplifts.
As the Bible commands, let us love our wives with selflessness and encouragement. Reverend Ransome-Kuti’s legacy shows that true partnership isn’t about seeking the limelight but being a steadfast rock for our partners, even when no one is watching. His example is a powerful reminder that a supportive partner can be the greatest catalyst for change.
